In Country Discoveries

MARKETS

Markets in Grenada are such a big deal! You have countless vendors standing by their standing promoting their baskets filled with different spices, chocolates, jellies, and honeys! Many of the vendors make a living from their stands and rely on the tourists coming form the cruises to keep them running! I, of course, went  a bit overboard when i was buying spices but I'm glad I did because I got to bring back home with me various pieces of Grenada.

NUTMEG

Grenada is the second largest exporter of nutmeg! prior to this trip I had never tasted nutmeg but when your'e in the island of spice, nutmeg is incorporated in almost every dish! Drive anywhere north (or east) of St.George's, and you'll find yourself among thousands  of nutmeg trees. The fruit is made into jam, liqueur, syrup, and can even be used as a marinade,. Even the Grenadian flag features this precious fruit!

WATERFALLS

One of the most beautiful sites in Grenada are hidden deep deep in the rain forest and demands a hefty hike. While in Grenada we visited two waterfalls, the Annandale Waterfall and Seven Sisters waterfall. The hike to Seven Sisters waterfall takes you through  a private plantation where I got the chance to see cocoa, nutmeg and banana trees , along with cinammon bark and pineapple plants!

SULFUR SPRINGS

An unexpected turn down the road lead us to the natural sulfur springs of Grenada. This spring had about 6 different natural sulfur pools each with varying depths. We were  quickly taught the benefits sulfur has on the skin and promptly encouraged to give it a try. At first I was skeptical, but when I saw that a family of 6 was neck deep in this sulfur mud I realized I had to give it a try- and thank goodness I did. My arms were rubbed with sulfur then washed off with natural water. Needless to say, my arms had never felt so soft before.

BEACHES

I was incredibly lucky to have a beach within walking distance from where I was staying. We visited one of Grenada's most famous beach, which, thank goodness, was only a 10 minute bus ride. Grand Anse beach  is Grenada's most famous, and most popular beach of the island. Being from Miami, I felt right at home- white soft sand, palm trees swaying, and simmering waters. Given our tight schedule, we had to make sure we made time to visit this beach once more!
