St. Georges General Hospital

One thing that I thought was unique was the fact that there may be as little as 2 nurses working the floor, but every nurse knows all the patients; even if there are more than 20 of them. One of the first things I noticed when I entered the ward was that the main source of light was from the open shutters that provided a nice breeze- the only source of air conditioning-and the rooms were divided in 4 sections; each section with about 6 beds in it.

The most eye opening day of the trip was when I shadowed nurses at the St. Georges General Hospital. . I was assigned the female surgical ward and I immediately noticed how different this was than the United States.

First, the wards were divided by male and female, and within those were branches. While working with my nurses I noticed that everything they record is done by hand. Just so you have an idea, there was one computer in the ward and when i asked my nurse what they use it for she laughed and told me " we use it to listen to music".
